Chairperson, Center of Healthcare Science and Technology (CHST)
Pei Song CHEE is a Professor at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Malaysia. He has been serving as the Chairperson of the UTAR Center for Healthcare Science and Technology (CHST) since 2022. , overseeing a team of 23 academic staffs. He earned his B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2010 and 2014, respectively. Prof. Chee's primary research contributions are in sensor and actuator technology with self-powered mechanisms. He has authored over 84 journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science, with publications in high-impact journals such as Lab on a Chip and NPJ Flexible Electronics. His paper in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (Q1) was selected as the top-accessed article in 2022, and his work in the IEEE Sensors Journal (Q1) was featured in 2020. In addition to his publications, Prof. Chee has filed 7 national patents and 1 international patent. He has also contributed 2 book chapters and had an article invited by THE INGENIEUR, A BEM magazine. Prof. Chee is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers. He supervises over 20 postgraduate students, including 7 PhD candidates and 13 master’s by research students. Furthermore, he mentors 2 postdoctoral fellows, ensuring that his knowledge and expertise are passed on to future leaders in the field. Prof. Chee actively collaborates with multinational industries and universities, securing research funding and consultancy projects to address industry and society challenges. His extensive consultation work, which has generated over RM 25,000, complements his research endeavours by providing practical insights and industry connections that enhance his grant applications. He has secured more than 30 funded projects. Among these, he has been the principal investigator (PI)/Project Leader and co-PI for 10 research grants from external organizations such as NanoMalaysia, CREST, and FRGS, totalling more than RM 2.0 million, with RM 1.5 million under his leadership as PI.
Prof. Chee has received numerous accolades for his exceptional contributions to teaching and research. These include the UTAR Innovation Award in 2024, the UTAR Teaching Excellence Award in 2020, the UTAR Research Excellence Award in 2019, and the UTAR e-Learning Excellence Award in 2023. Under his leadership, his research center won the Best Research Center Award in 2022, securing RM 100,000 in funding. His innovative work on advanced sensors has been recognized with the IEEE EMBS Publication Excellence Award in 2023 and a Gold Award at the 35th International Invention, Innovation, Technology Competition & Exhibition (ITEX 2024). Internationally, Dr. Chee was honored with the Best Oral Presentation and Young Scientist Award by IEEE ICET in 2022, a prestigious recognition given to only two young scientists under the age of 40 among all conference participants. Additionally, he has been acknowledged as an outstanding reviewer for journals such as Smart Materials and Structures in 2019 and Materials Research Express in 2018.
Prof. Chee has held significant leadership roles in the Malaysia's scientific community, including serving as the Chairperson for the IEEE Council on RFID - Malaysia Chapter from 2021 to 2023, and as the Vice Chairperson for the IEEE Council on RFID from 2019 to 2021. He is currently appointed as the Immediate Past Chair for 2024. In terms of professional qualifications, Prof. Chee is a Professional Engineer (PEng) in electronic engineering certified by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). He is also a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom, an Associate Fellow of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), USA, and a member of the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM). In his commitment to the academic community, Prof. Chee serves as an Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Panel Evaluator. He is also an External Examiner for master’s theses at public universities in Malaysia, having examined 6 master’s candidates, and for a doctoral thesis at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. Within UTAR, he is involved in the departmental curriculum development committee, reviews course syllabi, and prepares the Annual Programme Monitoring Report (APMR) and Self-Assessment Report (SAR). In addition, he is a member of the self-accreditation committee (SAC) for master's and PhD engineering programs by research.
